I never would have connected those dots on my own, and this commentary is filled with that kind of careful analysis, tying together obscure details across hundreds of pages to demonstrate bigger picture themes. It is wonderful how Professor Kenner can keep on about Ulyssesalways interesting and relevant and hardly repeating himself at all.

It’s still probably the best analysis of Ulysses that I’ve read. The result is Of the four commentaries that I read on Ulysses, this was my favorite. When I found that Kenner had written a book entitled Ulysses, I was willing therefore to re-read Joyce’s work for the first time since I was about eighteen and the experience disgusted me to no end in order that I could therefore read Kenner’s book with an easy conscience.
