The new history became a long-term process which, while it could be directed, all the same unfolded itself above the heads of the participants. The book can be situated alongside a number of works written in the post period attempting to investigate the pre-conditions of totalitarianism, although Koselleck does not explicitly set out to investigate this in the way that others did.
