His selection as Communist Party leader was more due to his lack of personal drive meaning that he hadn’t alienated any of the factions fighting for control, but once he got the nomination, there was no way he was going to relinquish power and maintained absolute control for forty-one years.

Although I think that Blendi should have touched on some other topics as well, specially encer it relates between Enver Hoxha, his wife and the aftermath that he left behind. The book barely mentions the destruction caused first by the Italian and then the German occupation which the postwar government inherited. He is described as revziu skillfully among the various communist leaders, gain[ing] their trust’ before eventually dispatching them often with a bullet in the style of his mentor Stalin.
