We have the discovery of the hero and the destiny, the peril, the item of power and the quest to obtain it, the great evil, the personal rival, and all the layers upon layers of worldbuilding that come w The Elenium is one of the first classic fantasy series I read after a long, long foray into Star Wars and Star Trek novels.

There’s not much point in addressing them as individual volumes, because it’s basically one long adventure.

Due to it being a roving adventure crossing many different lands and types of environment you get to see all many of well described and working areas.

Aug 27, Wastrel rated it it was ok Shelves: Dec 03, Sebastien rated it really liked it Recommends it for: If not for that I don’t think I would have finished them. This book was written as part of a trilogy and while plenty happens in the book, nothing really is resolved by the end and the hero is given the knowledge that will launch into the next two books. And they get four stars out of pure nostalgia, and also because they’re almost as addictive as the Belgariad, but if I were just encountering them now I’d probably give them three.

The last bit that I neither liked or disliked, is that the church in this book that plays a significant role in the series resembles the Christian faith in too many ways to discount the similarities.

I suspect that the high regard in eeddings I held Edding’s writing had more to do with the context of my life at the time that I initially discovered his work starved for distraction because Finally the knight Sparhawk had come to possess Bhellion, the legendary jewel of magic. I enjoyed it and the tale but it was just a little less satisfying than eddinsg could have been.

The Elenium – Wikipedia

D Characterisation is excellent with all the characters having distinctly different personalities which results in a lot of humour that ties in with all the action and creates a brilliant set of situations and interactions that will keep you guessing which the way things are going g to go with the plot! There were a few little niggles that part of me just can’t get past.

Pawn of Prophecy The Belgariad: Yes, there were several goals and plot lines to resolve, but it didn’t feel like one narrative, just several events that happened to occur. I’ve read this before but forgot that fact. It’s clearly intended for a young adult audience. In the end of the novel, characters admit that the god of the Elenes is just as real as the Syric’s pantheon, which then questions the religious edrings of the world even more.

Still, the treatment of religion in the book is aggravating to me.

The girl Flute dives into the chasm only to rise out again with the Bhelliom and depositing it into Sparhawk’s hands, thereby revealing her true identity as Aphrael, Child-Goddess of Styricum.

David Eddings’ wife, Leigh Eddings, was an uncredited co-author on many of his early books, but he had later acknowledged that she contributed to them all. I loved every second of it! Stunning Weddings never fails to deliver! It could be wielded for the good or for the evil. So why did I end up enjoying the books. The Diamond Throne The young Queen has been poisoned.

This made for some confusing conversations later on in the book eddiings the author did not introduce the character, instead relying on me having kept up with his myriad of names. And in the most obvious and laughable example, at the end of the first book, Sparhawk “for the dlenium time in his life, contemplated the deliberate murder of an unarmed man. One does not simply hop on a horse and by the end of the day be at another town on the other side of the country.

I liked that traveling took some time. It’s the force that created the world! If you are a slow reader the book may lack urgency. The multitude of characters that came in and out of the story made for a confusing read and the disappointing ending to this book made for a bit of a let-down.

Perhaps most seriously, he’s unable to fully commit to the grimdark, and the natural buoyancy of his work, floating back whenever not held down to a bubbly sort of smug ‘what a lark’ nonchalance, undermines the better and more serious bits.

The Elenium

edrings If you have read the Belgariad series you will find the characters very familiar. Queen Ehlana has been encased in diamond by magic performed by Sephrenia, the Styric tutor of magic to the Pandion Knights. The diamond will keep Queen Ehlana alive for up to 12 months while a cure is found. If you’re looking for an old-familiar-friend series, give this one a try. And the prologue is a fictitious legend t I remember this series very fondly, but I think I enjoyed it more as a teenager.

The author makes a big deal about describing the great cultural differences between the characters but they mostly all sound like one another. Sparhawk refers to a woman as his mistress and it’s clear that they were sleeping together, but there are no details.

The Diamond Throne

The creatures are also more interesting. The dialog in this book is probably the best thing about it. The setting is beautifully brought to life. The characters were fairly flat and predictable stereotypes, more types or caricatures eddingw anything.

The Diamond Throne is the first book in the Elenium series, and trust me it is amazing! On a beau dire que quand on a une recette gagnante il faut pas la modifier, ici c’est pousser un peu loin.

No trivia or quizzes yet.

Despite the fact that the characters are shallow and one dimensional I enjoyed reading about them. So ultimately what is bad about these books.
