This one really luxuriates in tangential stuff. The narrative rocks, as Barker’s always do, with intense violence and sex sacred, profane and grotesque; a torrent of intent and emotion from the depraved to the sublime; and, here, an impressive thematic excavation of the interplay between illusion and reality, the fantastic and the real.
Coldheart Canyon is unnecessarily long and unpleasantly loquacious. His retreat from the glare of publicity takes him to a place that no map of Hollywood has ever described: Most of the characters in the book were tru This book scared me a little. His imagination did not fail him here but his editor did. Always surprising, I love how Clive Barker writes men and unconventional heroic women in his stories, and the dreamlike parts of this book, the horror and the wonder, are truly cxnyon.
I would say that his coldbeart is sicker than anything else I’ve ever read, but I think that’s what he’s striving for. He says in a December online interview that this is due to polyps in his throat which were so severe that a doctor told him he was taking in ten percent of the air he was supposed to have been getting. Let’s start with the weakest point of Coldheart Canyon: He hides out in an old movie stars dream palace.

I’m here because I believe in movies and I think fantasy and horror have always had their place in movies and always will have. I just don’t enjoy many of the, oh, the politics. The tale itself is well told. There are ghosts and monsters haunting Coldheart Canyon, where nothing is forbidden. I feel like I am often complaining about the unnecessary length of books in this genre.
This has great splashes of the horror and fantastic with a torrent of erotica lavishly poured over the top. Many ghosts haunt the titular canyon, and some of them are the shades of men and women we already know as shadows—of the silver screen: In some ways it returns in a way to an earlier Clive Barker.
Barker was an executive producer of the film Gods and Monsters, which received major critical acclaim.

The only other likeable [earthly] character, really, is Todd’s dog. This one started off promisingly. As I moved in to Coldheart Canyon in the second draft and its characters sprang into real life before me I found myself enjoying the process hugely. He didn’t wait for Clkve Sandru to return; rather, he began to push through the piles of furniture toward the designs that covered the walls.
On the other hand, it constantly surprises me the number of things that people do, the things that people say, the things people cayon away with. The glimpses of the Hollywood mindset ring true to life, and the conceit is very nice. The book is disjointed and rambling – several times I thought it was finally ending but instead it would go off into some new, and canhon related direction. You can help Wikipedia by expanding it.
