That the principal fruits of victory are first gathered in the pursuit, we have already learnt in the twelfth chapter of lcausewitz 4th Book. This is by far the most accurate treanslation of On War available in English.
Jolles himself is a bit obscure to students of military affairs, largely because his translation of On War was his only published effort in that field. Graham translation of Clausewitz’s Vom Kriege published in London in Visit the Clausewitz Bookstores!
Unfortunately, his German was not particularly fluent, his translation was excessively dense and literal, his English was Victorian, and the sources for the background information he offered were weak.

You wouldn’t want to end up with the atrocious Penguin edition, edited in by Anatol Rapoport. This on-line version of On War is the first English translation, done in Hahlweg researched the history of the text and clausewirz Clausewitz’s original wording as much as possible from the interventions of later editors.

This quite readable translation appeared at the close of the Vietnam War and—principally for marketing and copyright reasons—has become the modern standard. There have been four more-or-less complete and a few partial English translations of On War. For some unexplained reason, Maude’s dated comments were included in the very joolles Penguin abridgement made by Anatol Rapoport, and thus the social Darwinism of Maude has come to be attached erroneously to Clausewitz himself.
Jolles quickly developed a good appreciation of On Jollles s significance.
This development was most likely a result of financial considerations rather than of xlausewitz qualities of the respective versions, since the Jolles translation remains under copyright Random House whereas the Graham copyright had lapsed. The Paret version is available from Princeton University Press image at left in both hardcover and paperback editions.
