I wish that landlady would learn to laugh in a more cheering manner; it makes one feel as if there was someone dead in the house. Something of the character of an oratory was imparted to it by a tall crucifix, which reached almost to the ceiling scrapook one side; the figure was painted of the natural colours, the cross was black.
